Accessibility policy
Continuum Design (Continuum Design, LLC) is committed to digital accessibility for all. Information should be available for everyone to use and enjoy.
How do I measure accessibility on this site?
Continuum Design refers to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 for accessibility guidance. The site is tested for Level AA compliance. My testing methodology is explained below.
Testing for accessibility
I test the pages of this site using the axe browser plugin for automated scans. Scanners like axe are a good first step, and generally catch 30-35% of accessibility errors.
I also use a number of best practices and manual tests to gauge accessibility:
Semantic HTML
- Clean HTML5 markup
- Properly nesting heading levels
- Clearly labeled form inputs
- Meaningful error messages and notifications
- Descriptive alt text for images
Responsive design
- Fluid type that sizes to fit
- Honoring browser font size preferences
- Limiting page shift and content redraws
- Optimized for small screens all the way to high-density displays
Manual testing
- Zooming layouts to 200%, 300%, 400% at 1280px browser width
- Limiting page shift or content redraws
- Navigating links and contact form by keyboard only
- Browsing with MacOS and iOS VoiceOver screen reader
Future enhancements
This site was released as soon as I had a minimally viable product. So there’s a few things I want to do going forward:
- Add a dark mode theme
- Optimize CSS and JavaScript to load pages even faster
- Rework margins and padding to use latest inline and block CSS
- Add automated tests to run axe scans at build time
